Arthur Mensch
CEO & Co-FounderArthur Mensch is the CEO and one of the three co-founders of Mistral AI. Born and educated in France, Arthur is widely considered one of the sharpest minds in the European AI community. He earned his degree in mathematics and computer science from the prestigious École Polytechnique — France's top engineering university — and later completed his PhD focusing on machine learning and neural networks.
Before starting Mistral AI, Arthur worked as a research scientist at Google DeepMind in London, one of the most prestigious AI research labs on the planet. At DeepMind, he contributed to some of the most advanced language model research in the world, gaining deep technical understanding of how large-scale AI systems are built, trained, and deployed.
In 2023, Arthur made the bold decision to leave DeepMind to co-found Mistral AI alongside Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix. His motivation was clear: he believed that the most powerful AI technology was becoming too concentrated in a handful of American corporations, and that Europe needed its own champion. As CEO, Arthur leads the overall strategy and vision of Mistral AI, steering it toward a future where AI is open, efficient, and accessible.
Arthur's leadership style is described as calm, deeply technical, and vision-driven. He is known for making bold product decisions — like releasing Mistral 7B as a fully open model — that challenged industry norms and won the company enormous respect in the global AI community. He is a firm believer in the idea that openness in AI is not just good for business, but good for society.
