Imagine you are a farmer in rural Maharashtra who needs information about government crop insurance schemes. The information exists online, but it is all in English — a language you never learned. Or imagine you are a small business owner in Tamil Nadu who wants to use AI to handle customer calls — but every AI voice assistant only understands English or speaks with an accent your customers cannot understand. Or a student in Uttar Pradesh who wants to learn using an AI tutor that can explain concepts in simple Hindi, the way a real teacher would. For the vast majority of India's 1.4 billion people, the AI revolution has been largely inaccessible — built for English speakers in rich countries.
Sarvam AI was founded in 2023 to change this. The company builds large language models (LLMs) and voice AI systems designed natively for Indian languages — not translations of English models, but AI systems built from the ground up to understand the nuances, idioms, scripts, and cultural contexts of Indian languages. Sarvam's models support 22+ Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, and many more.
What Makes Sarvam Special: Most global AI companies add Indian language support as an afterthought — translating from English models. Sarvam builds natively for Indian languages first. This matters enormously: a model trained to think in Hindi handles Hindi differently from a model that translates Hindi from English. Native training produces more natural, accurate, culturally appropriate responses — the difference between a tourist guide and a local expert.
Sarvam AI was co-founded by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar — two of India's most respected technology and AI research leaders. Vivek's background building India-scale technology infrastructure (including his work on Aadhaar, the world's largest biometric identity system) and Pratyush's deep AI research expertise in Indian language NLP (natural language processing) make them ideal partners to build India's foundational AI layer.
The company has received significant backing from investors who share the vision of India building its own AI capabilities rather than simply importing AI tools built for other markets. In February 2024, Sarvam raised $41 million in Series A funding, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India) — a landmark round that demonstrated serious investor confidence in the Indian AI ecosystem.
Sarvam AI's products serve a wide range of users: enterprises building customer-facing AI applications in Indian languages, government organisations deploying AI for citizen services, developers building apps for Indian markets, and increasingly, individual users who access AI through Sarvam's consumer products. As AI moves from a technology curiosity to an essential business tool, having Indian AI capabilities built on a foundation that understands India's languages and culture is increasingly important for Indian businesses and for India's technological sovereignty.
