Joelle Pineau is a Canadian computer scientist, researcher, and academic. She is a professor of computer science at McGill University and serves as the Vice President of AI Research at Meta, overseeing the worldwide Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) labs.

Pineau completed her Ph.D. in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University in 2004. Her research focuses on reinforcement learning and decision making under uncertainty, applying these models to control robotic wheelchair assistants. She also pioneered the use of reinforcement learning to design **adaptive medical treatments** (clinical trial protocols) for cancer and epilepsy, personalizing doses based on real-time patient feedback.
FAIR and Reproducibility in AI
At Meta AI, Pineau oversees FAIR's global research labs. She is also a champion of AI reproducibility, having created the **Machine Learning Reproducibility Checklist** to encourage researchers to publish their code and variables, improving scientific integrity in machine learning.
